The country would be much worse off if every election were a referenda on the party in power. Seems like polarization, zero-sum contests etc are moving us that way though

Also... Dems choosing not to pursue impeachment b/c “let the voters decide in upcoming elec” (P.S. 18 months is NOT “upcoming”) sets up a pretty horrible pretense for 2020; election no longer about choosing officials but whether prev Reps acted properly re: prev corrupt POTUS.

There’s another dynamic at play in 2020, of course: Trump is unlikely to win a referendum on his presidency. If Dems do stick to the center and make the election about Trump (not impeachment etc) they will likely still fare well.

When parties lose an election they’re rewarded for moving toward the ideological extremes before the next cycle. Seems that both Biden and House Dems (disregarding the midterms) stepping away from impeachment are symptoms of pols & pundits having the opposite impression.

Just one poll, but Buttigieg in third at 17% and 8 points above the next candidate (O’Rourke) is something

I know Mueller is the news of the day, but if you want to take a break & read about the puzzle of how NGOs and the gov of Bangladesh moved people off of wells contaminated with arsenic and actually ended up making them sicker, have I got a chart for you:

Mueller report also includes an excerpt from an interview with the White House Press Secretary, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, where she admits she lied to the press when she made up accounts of FBI agents saying they wanted Comey fired.

2/2 Dems will be pleased that Mueller invited Congress to continue investigating Trump re: obstruction of justice: “We concluded that Congress has authority to prohibit a president’s corrupt use of his authority in order to protect the integrity of the administration of justice”

My Mueller take: It’s clear that Trump at least *attempted* to obstruct the investigation, by way of witness tampering & efforts to fire him. It’s also clear to me that in concluding no obstruction, AG Barr did not act in good faith as a servant of the American people. 1/2

Mueller writes that the president engaged in “public attacks on the investigation, non-public efforts to control it, and efforts in both public and private to encourage witnesses not to cooperate with the investigation”.

Report also says that in 2018 POTUS directed McGahn to lie about his earlier directions to him to fire the Special Counsel, which seems even worse?
