As a science fiction fan, I'll say such stories intrinsically interesting (even though sometimes cliched at this point in history and cultural development).

Scifi (and fiction in general) share a lot of qualities with futurism: it says less about the future, or whatever the subject may be, and more about the fears, hopes, and dreams of the people of the period when it was written/created.

In that sense, it would be illuminating to know what authors of scifi (or speculative fiction) from past civilizations feared, hoped, and dreamt of.
