Great new #AnimalLinguistics paper. Ecstatic display songs of African penguins follow both Zipf’s law of abbreviation & Menzerath’s law. First demonstration of both laws outside primates. Work led by @LivioF_80, also with @David_Reby, @Marco_Gamba et al. royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/pdf/10.109… pic.twitter.com/fkmqlCwQPi

See, people think Anscombe's quartet is all artificial extreme cases and no one would actually make such a stupid mistake with regression, and then you get figures like Fig 8C jneurosci.org/content/32/11/… pic.twitter.com/sEG3BXpQYj

I fully agree. and I do think investing in enabling people to learn such languages no matter how "minority-bound" they are is a good investment (e.g. the only proper FØ course is in the Faroes in august, when I actually work...)

Still my kids to speak IT&FØ&DK for the people reasons, which are important. As a note aside, I never really learned my originary dialect (Romagnolo), partly a shame, but also it was much more useful to speak decent FR & EN for my life and preferences.

it's tricky and nuanced. I work in DK and EN, speak to part of my family in IT, should speak to the rest in Faroese (FØ). I have to admit that setting aside the time to properly learn FØ (50k speakers) is still difficult. 1/n

trying to simulate 4 related variables: 3 ordinal variables with a weak positive "correlation" (think spearman rank) and a continuous variable related to 2 of them for an exercise. Looking into the OrdNor package for R, but I could use friendlier tools
