I used to think that speaking with non native speakers was a waste of time for Chinese practice and bad for accent/pronunciation, but it is bloody cool that Chinese is the lingua franca at our uni and I have Japanese/Korean friends that don't speak Englih, it's a lot of fun

Almost finished 活著, not too difficult and a really interesting read, highly recommend for Mandarin learners. Follows the life story of 富貴 and all the hardships he encounters while tieing into some big/major events in China history. Really enjoy the blend of fiction with fact

Interesting, thanks Kevin. If I ever start Japanese I was thinking of starting with that book, seems like a decent source of dialogues with Kana transcripts starting off before I am ready for more authentic content.

Family just left Taiwan and had a great time, and surprisingly had very few communication problems going around Taiwan. Although, translation is much much harder than just understanding and ordering for myself. Happy Chinese New Year everyone, 我們一起加油啊!

Zero experience with Japanese but just commenting so I get notified when people reply to you. I am interested to see what people in the community do.

I am not saying English is "easy" to learn, I think learning any language requires a lot of effort and dedication, I just mean to say compared with for example Korean/Japanese/Arabic etc it is probably easier for most French speakers.

I think there are two things that can determine the difficulty of a language, lexical distance from a language you know well and avaliability of resources. French and English are relatively close, and for the latter there is so much interesting content avaliable in English
