The term to discuss Facebook and other platforms that make a profit of preferring emotionally intense content to deliver more advertising is: Toxic Business Model. We probably will just need to ban them the same way we ban pollution.

We need to seriously discuss breaking up Facebook before it breaks our society.

What I want in my timeline is: 1. Tweets from the accounts I follow 2. In the order in which they were tweeted. That's it. Nothing else. Ever.

Sure they have, but well designed pen & paper-systems can be verified by ordinary people and have proven remarkably resilient. Computerized systems have way more complex problems, easier attack scaling , less verifiablity and have been shown to be totally broken time and again.

If the diff is large enough to affect the outcome, repeat the vote in this voting place. In practice, someone who watches people inserting one vote into the urn all day will easily spot if there is more than one . Such an fraud attempt carries a serious jail sentence risk.

The attack that someone a) gets knowledge about how the ballots are marked for a specific voting place b) reproduces them c) manages to hide more votes upon insertion by folding cleverly? That would generate a counter diff between registered at entry and ballot box inserts.

Person who counts how many ballots are actually put into the ballot box. This catches diffd between people who show up snd people who actually cast their vote.

There is a second counter at the urn for numbers of ballots cast. The vulnerabilities of the paper process are well understood and can be mitigated by procedures that can be run / verified by ordinary people. Contrary to anything that involves computing.

Procedures involving multiple people. The urn is shown to the observers present to be empty before voting starts and is then sealed. Counting is done directly in the voting place, publicly. Number of votes cast is known from the voter list before the urn is opened and compared.

That was punchcard and optical scan. I am talking about pen, paper and human eyes to count.

The bigger problem for the US is not having a standardized local citizen register and no universal ID system, which causes the "register to vote" and "dispute the right to vote" set of process vulnerabilities.
