, a : At least since Francis Crick’s famous review of 1979, neuroscientists have dreamed of ways to identify all the neurons connected to a cell of interest. In the last decade this has become a reality through the widespread use of rabies virus tracers. 1/11

Today, in collaboration with , we are releasing the “hemibrain” connectome, a detailed map of neuronal connectivity of roughly half of a fruit fly brain, plus tools for visualization and analysis. Learn more at .

One connection of this hub is to the accessory medulla, a key node in light sensitive circadian circuits. We identified neurons that integrate visual and thermosensory signals – we hypothesise that these mediate temperature entrainment of the circadian clock. 5/7

One target region is the lateral accessory calyx (lACA) for which we produced a complete connectome. As suspected it provides input to the mushroom body (a memory centre). But when we reconstructed its neurons we found it is a hub connecting to areas all across the brain. 4/7

Temperature and humidity are crucial senses. In insects, they are mostly detected by the antennae (like smell). Sensory neurons project to “VP” glomeruli in the brain. Connectomics data found 7 (not 5) VP glomeruli & lab identified candidate receptor molecules. 2/7

Our work here may be one of the last big beasts of the manual reconstruction era. See a spike in productivity when made his partial neuron auto-segmentation available to us? (essential plumbing from )

Beautiful! And a big collaborative effort in a single setup with ~275 users who created ~44MM nodes that make up ~1.2MM neurons + fragments (= ~10.7m!), connected through currently ~1.1MM synaptic nodes. All software open source, relying on + .
