I hate ads, but I also dislike how the current software development commons is sustained (or not). This is a conversation worth pursuing, and the people who are acting maddest could stand to do some self-reflection.

I wish companies that actively benefitted from open source work - especially those maintained by individuals - would provide a monthly stipend/allowance (whether financial or contribution time) for their employees that had to be invested in an OSS project or a maintainer's work

Yeah he wants that and for other people to be able to access the same ability to contribute to the commons. He's said "if I can't do it (with my privileges) , how is this going to work for anyone else?" (not direct quote, summary)

Isn't a waiter basically just a person who carries food? Maybe I'm misunderstanding the job, but shouldn't the cook actually be getting the funding? The work to make the food would be far harder than just carrying it out to customers, IMO.

This isn’t about money. This about starting a conversation. I want to improve the relationship between open source maintainers and consumers. The status quo is not working for a lot of maintainers. I wrote more about my intentions here:

love the non-JS developers in the `funding` issue who are definitely very affected by it and definitely not just jumping on a dogpile. did someone post it to 4chan or something?

It took me a while to realize it, but almost no one in that thread was actually a user of Standard.

Fair. But you have to realize the status quo is not working for lots of maintainers. It's not reasonable to expect us to sit around waiting for companies to throw some pennies our way via donations. If folks want to experiment with new funding methods, then I support them.

Please don't spread misinformation. Both companies knowingly sponsored StandardJS knowing their message would appear in the terminal. They're both supportive of exploring new ways to support open source. It's a bummer this didn't work out, but I don't hold it against them

Feedback from folks who have never contributed to open source count very little to me. If you don't contribute to the commons, you don't get a seat at the decision-making table.

"The standard experience of maintainers trying to support their work is that everyone makes a public point of standing in support of maintainer funding as a general matter, but strongly opposes whatever specific approach the maintainer actually happens to be trying" -

Blown away by the pushback received for trying to make sustainable. Do we want to live in a world where only corporations can do open source?
