Takeaway 1. The uprising marked a turning point for both protestors & regime. Both demonstrated remarkable willingness to escalate violence. Protestors had no leadership or clear political grievance as in 2009. The entire system was the target. Riots & chaos.

2. Regime demonstrated brazen willingness to crush & kill. Security forces opening fire at unarmed protestors in multiple cities. And total disregard of international backlash by shutting down the internet.

3. As an Iran watcher this looks like the start of a new chapter. Iranians coming to terms with a new reality of oppression. Regime coming to terms with a tinderbox that can erupt again anytime.

4.Regime can blame "foreign enemies" all it wants but even if foreign enemies could mobilize this level of popular unrest across Iran, the Islamic Republic is in deep trouble.

You made an important point. Protesters had no leadership. Without one the protests will continue to fail. Iranian opposition needs a leader.

This is the weakest, yet the most important, link in the "opposition chain", which I too have pointed out all along. In my very personal opinion, late Shapour Bakhtiar could have made a superb opposition leader. I haven't seen anyone of his calibre since 1979.

Wanting to get rid of the entire political system is indicative of a very clear political grievance. In fact itโ€™s much more clear than 2009.

Their political grievance? Misplaced priorities, ineptness & corruption of the Their Aspiration? Popular sovereignty rather than rule by divine right + separation of mosque from state + respect for human rights. ๐Ÿ™

Islamic Republic as a political system is the biggest grievance! It wasn't for nothing. It's not narrow though like 2009.
