Great thread and you should read it, not least because it makes the tennis analogy I gave in my recent piece on Facebook's Oversight Board (lawfareblog.com/facebooks-over…) seem _very_ deep. twitter.com/daisychristo/s…

Thanks for including me!! Also making me reevaluate. Normally I feel the need to write something up as a proper blog post or paper for posterity, if I want people to read it later, and only write twitter threads if I don't have time.
... Can tweet storms be used in job packets?

Facebook to do more about coronavirus misinformation.
That's good! I hope efforts are matched w/ transparency so we (& by 'we', I mean researchers much smarter than me) can learn more abt how this stuff spreads and what to do abt it proactively & offline about.fb.com/news/2020/01/c… pic.twitter.com/WsxxXv6a14

Sad reason to have an Australia podcast -- but I hope you'll give it a listen. It's an interesting case study in what is going to be an ongoing problem, and @elisethoma5 has lots of insight that goes well beyond this particular disaster twitter.com/qjurecic/statu…

A story about how information is disseminated and the role of gatekeepers:
•John Roberts won't read Rand Paul's question
•RP goes out and reads it to a group of reporters—and, as far as I can tell, gets very little mainstream coverage
•RP tweets the question out

For the same reason it's doing this whole thing, I suppose. The Board is a bid for legitimacy -- and it will lose its bet if it doesn't follow through.

Thanks for reading! Although for the record, while I generally favor incrementalism, I think the limitation of only being able to challenge take-downs (and not leave-ups) at start up is a blunder that will skew the work of the board, and I hope it's rectified soon

That's such a great point. I guess the q is, fundamentally, what is the Board? A counterweight to this previous trend, to protect more speech? Or a new institution to help make content moderation rules better more generally?
Guess we're gonna find out!

But to me that's still not a good enough excuse. Legal systems have dealt with anonymized cases for ages. It's not a big enough hurdle to justify slanting the entirety of the board's work.
