This is one of the most important results in computing education research in the last decade, and everyone teaching coding ought to know it and act on it. (So should people building programming systems for novices and casual users.)

Hey, can all the job ads for "computational bio." or "biostats" reword as "computational genomics" or "biomedical statistics"? Thanks, random ecologist

PSA: If you want URMs to participate in more conferences, REIMBURSEMENTS DO NOT HELP. THEY ADD SO MUCH MORE BURDEN. Sincerely, A broke grad student who can't afford conference costs (travel, registration, hotels, poster printing, etc).

Woo! 🎉🎉 The MultiPLIER preprint is up! Q: for rare diseases where the number of samples is always going to be low, is there a way to benefit from ? shows that ML on a large dataset w/o the disease (recount2) + transfer = good!

Getting ready to teach dplyr joins to new users tomorrow, so naturally I productively procrastinated by getting to know the new gganimate. It is the coolest!

There's been 32 days of peaceful protest outside the White House, but without twitter I wouldn't know they were happening. The 14 nazis who showed up in Charlottesville last week got weeks of breathless coverage. Journalists, do better.

You're white. A person of color has directly or indirectly suggested that something you have said about race/POCs/white people is problematic or something you didn't intend to be about race was inherently related to race. They might even have said "you(r comments) are racist."

Thanks to Facebook, Russia could non-publicly microtarget black voters first with a pic of Beyoncé dancers—captioned “Black girl magic!”—and then with ads urging them to not vote in 2016. Trump campaign also said they used FB to discourage minority voters.

This white guy just pulled up in front of my local Mexican restaurant in his big truck, blaring music and saw a group of young Latino men drinking on the sidewalk. He rolled down the window, everyone paused warily. Then he shouts: “I love you, brothers! Fuck Trump! Let’s dance.”

They've obviously been violating ADA already for 28yrs but now they're *suddenly* concerned when a black woman is running for governor? 🙄 There is nothing in the ADA that requires them to be closed because the government has failed to comply with the law.

Excellent piece on the story behind from and the impact that it is having, becoming "indispensable to many academics" and broadening reach through partnerships - amazing result!

My daughter started 9th grade yesterday. Her first class of the day was Computer Science. A class of 19 boys and her. The teacher thought she was lost, and asked which room she was looking for. And we wonder why this industry has a diversity problem.

But data-driven design in general is vulnerable to optimizing what’s easy to measure (shorter browsing time, more videos played) and missing what’s hard to measure (browsing is stressful and sucks now).

Maybe they don’t care and haranguing users with annoying videos until they play something is the goal. Or maybe it’s an honest mistake, drawing the wrong conclusion from the data. Or maybe my experience (and that of 100% of other humans whose opinions I’ve heard) is not typical.

This comment makes me think about faulty conclusions in data-driven design. I do spend less time browsing— not because I find things faster, but because browsing is now a hostile experience and I feel chased by the videos until I pick something.
