This is very timely. Today I start teaching a module on Cellular Biotechnology and will be including aspects of social justice issues. The use of Henrietta Lack’s cells HeLa cells without her consent will be a key example discussed

I will be 90 and STILL talking about how nuts it was that in my college level microbiology class, while the use of immortal cell lines for vaccine development was extensively (!!!) discussed my (black) professor did not mention Ms.Lacks. Not ONCE. Higher education smh

So much to glean from the ultra important story of Mrs. Lacks. Spent time with my scholars discussing the the scientific impact of HeLa cells, bioethics and most importantly who she was as a person.

Same. And it’s very telling the “type” of people the ‘alt-right’ feel should be recognised 🤔

It’s very disappointing that the hospital where her cells were taken can’t even acknowledge the history in their courses 😕

was NEVER compensated for her contributions to science, and she NEVER gave consent to her biological matter being used for research. EVERY AMERICAN SHOULD KNOW HER NAME. Thank you, Henrietta. And ❤️
