Nothing wrong with synchronized. If you don't like it don't look at the Vert.x code. It's heavily used there and overhead of uncontended locking is virtually zero esp with biased locking. And let's not forget Vert.x destroys Spring on perf benchmarks :)

And before you say "biaised locking is going away in Java15". That's fine, we can benchmark and see what the perf diff is. Probably it will be unnoticeable, but if not we can refactor.
