what if public libraries were open late every night and we could engage in public life there instead of having to choose between drinking at the bar and domestic isolation

maybe we wouldn’t be so addicted to these screen things if we had accessible, inviting, and stimulating public spaces to feel seen, connected, included, and nourished?

I love this idea. When I was a young man courting my now wife, pretty much the default place we'd go till 11pm or so was Barnes & Noble. Our libraries in town closed at 5pm then. They're better now, but I'm a big believer in public spaces & love your thinking here

IMO isolation in the West isn't a problem solved that can be solved with more physical affordances. It's cultural, and tied to social constructs of individualism vs. collectivism. In other words, the biggest hurdle wouldn't be offering the program, but getting people to come out.

agreed! and individualism has been baked into our commutes and working schedules in ways that’s very hard to overcome
