The bigger the pie, the more there is to redistribute as well
Technology innovation, if done well, helps do more with less—grows the pie without hurting the environment (amazon.com/More-Less-Surp…)
Technology innovation is thus a force for good, and we should encourage more of it

A friend asked me to defend technology in two tweets. Curious for critiques, or your own version. Here's mine:
Society survives or dies based on its ability to sustainably grow the pie.
Without a growing pie, there’s a winner for every loser, and we engage in zero sum conflict.

Can you explain the meaning of pie in the context of other species and/or environment?
I disagree that any innovation (technological or otherwise) has the capability to balance the "good" of every stakeholder in an ecosystem. "Good" is subjective.

If the pie were restricted to humans, then the value prop of technological innovation is extremely clear.
A sustainable environment is pre-requisite for human survival on earth, so it's an inherently selfish motive.

Technology adds a new flavour to the pie, and grows it in favour of a select group in society.

Technology allows us to exchange information with our environment faster, safer and more efficient, allowing us to evolve as humans.
It’s not about “the pie” or money ffs. It’s about our evolution.

The criticism is for people who say it's an absolute good and ignore the downsides. If it grows too quickly for us to understand the implications, it can harm people (pollution, addiction, etc).

Of course we want to grow the pie, but this broad generalization is useless because you can't criticize it. Point to specific innovations and critics can point to the specific problems we need to address.

Um. IMO you defended financial capitalism and then squeezed in technology with a ”if done right”, making a ”true scotsman” kind of argument. Are there no benefits of technology without growth? Can there be growth without better technology? What does tech bring? Good/ bad/ intr.
