Lex's cell carving is modeled on Heinrich Leutemann's version of Hannibal's Crossing of the Alps--a depiction of one of the great military achievements of antiquity. When we wrote this, we did not believe two Art Department guys named Butch and Reiner would CARVE IT.

All of Lex's chess moves in the cell block are simple, but winning moves, courtesy of Marcella Kinsella in our props department. She's a chess fanatic, and wanted to get the details right.

There are levels of clearance when you're using books in a TV show. Some clear completely, others can be shown without cover art. So you won't SEE all of the books in the stack, but they're all real, and thought went into all of them.

Bobby Fischer lost the first game of the 1972 World Championship to Boris Spassky. Me, Marcella (again!), Jon, and Melissa, replicated the endgame. The moves Lex and Red Daughter are playing are the actual last few moves.

Lex’s reference to Babylon: doubly interesting, since Alexander died there.

Something I forgot: Red Daughter walking toward the Kryptonite aurora comes from her Gatsby fixation. And the green light seen from a distance.
