50 cognitive biases, quite a few because of energy-intense human brains being so efficient at being more (energy-)efficient, e.g. Google effect, lazy causal inference, self-exceptionalism.

John Schulman is one of the researchers I admire most in the field. Awesome guide for how to do a PhD / break into research! I need to implement more papers from scratch...

This is awesome! One thing I think is amazing about DataFlow/Beam is that it makes distributed workflow processing a cinch. I like how you split the rendering from the simulation.

All very amusing to the outside reader, but what does one have to gain from publicly stating anti-acknowledgements and humiliating funding agencies / other academics? Isn't it generally bad to burn bridges?

Check out Energy Gang's recent podcast episodes on investment and clean tech! Jigar and Catherine bring a lot of insight on the bizdev and policy aspects of cleantech investment, in addition to the tech plays that most VCs fund.

U may wonder why defining a single net requires so many abstractions (GraspingModel, LegacyGraspingModelWrapper, CriticModel, blah blah). This is because the QT-Opt system has been continuously refactored & adapted to a large team's needs for 5 years 🤕. Welcome to SW eng!!

Every 1-2 months, "QT-Opt grasping" paper authors receive an email asking about implementation details of the convnet. Took awhile, but we finally got around to open-sourcing the QT-Opt model as a Tensor2Robot model.

There's great potential in the use of machine learning for a wide variety of weather and climate problems. Here's one example, predicting precipitation at much finer spatial granularity than traditional physics-based models.

P.s. on the subject of reviewing office equipment, I've always wanted to review a Titan RTX GPU 😂

Cons: the chair seat is large and might be too big for short people (5ft and under). armrests are side-to-side adjustable, but need to be tightened or they slip and slide around.

having a good ergo setup is a good long-term investment. The office furniture folks at kindly sent me one of their ErgoChairs () to review. Pros: nice breathable back, all the adjustable options of a pro office chair.

Peloton sent me my "2019 year in review." They didn't design for the edge case where the user only used the Peloton one time during the whole year.

8/ Simulations of reality often lack the functional properties of modeled objects (never mind chemical properties). Cooking eggs would be a good forcing function to encourage us to not overfit to or rely to heavily on simulation.

7/ For those interested in RL research, maybe instead of trying to estimate empowerment of a policy in an entire world, you can more easily estimate the empowerment w.r.t. a single versatile object (the egg).

6/ Many objects in human spaces have functional properties (doors open, hand tools convert energy, buttons are pressed). An egg is not typically thought of as a tool, but it has as many functional forms as there are ways to cook it. Great object to master manipulation skill over.
