Protip: If you want to learn about something specific, email an academic about their research. This is from David Fifield (published with permission) about how encrypted Tor traffic is censored in China. I hadn't even asked what my question was yet, just if he was the right guy.

I wrote two sentences, he responded with explanations + 11 links. I should ask him for a BTC address and send him a tip!

First, this is awesome. Second, I'm so f$cking grateful extremely competent, dedicated people like you and David are fully focused on tech privacy and government censorship and surveillance--advancing the former to thwart the latter 🙏🛡️🔇

Researchers love to talk about their research. I arrange a few lab trips a year for my kid just by asking people on Twitter.

I have a fond memory of this from high school. I emailed a materials science professor from MIT asking about waterproof surfaces. He wrote back my questions in detail. Some researchers are awesome!

But in that case there is an interesting arms race. For Obs3, the Chinese strategy is “uh, looks like Obs3”, then it does a handshake of its own from a weird distributed network and, if successful, blocks the IP/port for a day.

Thanks very much, Eric. I have been wondering about this same thing. The tools here are very powerful and increasingly more so as time passes. I’d like to understand them better than I do.
