Mewis’s friend, told AFP that in the past weeks Mewis was “nervous” after the assassination of Iraqi scholar Hisham al-Hashimi since “she was really involved in the protests too.” This surge in attacks on Iraq’s activists is an attack on Iraq’s future.

Mewis recalled that 10 years ago “when I put my foot on Baghdad’s ground, I felt at home.” Friends and fellow activists regard her as someone who is very close to the Iraqi public and the “definition of humanity.” She deserved better.
