There are a lot more, but I don't have first-hand experience with all of them. Some include: @planetacterra @MyceliumYouth @EmeraldCities @votesolar @TelosAlliance @MoveGen @APEN4EJ @SPUR_Urbanist

For purely local organizations, @ClimateSF is working to push local legislation to electrify our building stock (this is a huge and under-invested-in problem—if successful, SF could be the first city to do this, and set a model for the rest of the world that needs to do the same)

I have a list here of national climate action groups, most (all?) of which Bay Area Chapters: erikareinhardt.com/personal-clima…
Also highly recommend these national non-profits (and @carbon180 is based here!): erikareinhardt.com/personal-clima…

The data does not support that. Don't trust me, trust the data and scientists.

But even if everyone did, we'd still have to transform the entirety of the energy, transportation and industry sectors, which is why the #1 action is voting and organizing to create the political will to address the myriad of GHG sources.

It depends on billions of people deciding to cut food out of "doing the right thing," and they could change their minds later. There are no controls in place encourage this behavior long-term. For those who want to—great!

These are all very valid (and common) questions, glad you're thinking about and digging into this :)

In addition, natural gas infra is a large source of methane leaks, which have 86x the global warming potential of carbon dioxide over a 20-year timescale, a huge impact on short-term warming. Continuing to rely on natural gas in our homes is to continue relying on leaky system.

Fortunately we now have air-to-water and air-to-air heat pumps, which are more efficient than any other gas or electric heaters. While renewables still have some lifetime GHG emissions from manufacturing, it's much less than any other alternative today: carbonbrief.org/solar-wind-nuc…

It's not a permanent, stable solution, and doesn't get us all the way there.

I respectfully disagree. While it can certainly help (I recommend it, and am mostly vegetarian myself!), we're not going to solve the climate crisis by only addressing one sector, through individuals opting into (what can feel like) personal sacrifice.

Reducing flying and adopting EVs also aren't either-or decisions. Save the money on flights and put it towards an EV!

We will _also_ need to get vehicle manufacturing emissions down to zero, but that's a problem that industry will have to solve.

Making your next car electric doesn't increase the overall demand for cars, it shifts it from gas to electric. Per quote above, there is a small increase in GHG manufacturing emissions, which quickly corrects for itself (and will even more rapidly as more of the grid goes green).

"Battery electric cars make up for their higher manufacturing emissions within eighteen months of driving—shorter range models can offset the extra emissions within 6 months—and continue to outperform gasoline cars until the end of their lives."

Unfortunately with planes we don't yet have an immediate zero-emissions replacement (maybe drop-in biofuels, maybe other biofuels, maaaaybe hydrogen), but we should expect that the transformation can be much more rapid once the technical solutions and economic incentives exist.

There's no way to hit zero overall emissions if folks still drive gas cars. Gas cars are a very distributed problem with 1.4 billion actors—that transition directly depends on individual purchasing behavior (and the policy that mandates and incentivizes it). Not so with planes.

I do, for a few reasons (while also agreeing that reducing air travel it's a cost-saving way to reduce carbon, and people should do it as well!)
