The easy way to build an academic career is to find an existing trend, and to hook onto it, providing justification for what industry would have done anyway. Think of the NoSQL push and all the papers justifying fundamentally broken databases.
Quisling is exactly the right term.

Sadly in my time in academia, while I encountered a lot of brilliant people, I mostly encountered quislings, and the brilliant people rarely cared about public engagement.
