You need space and privacy to go into odd directions. Twitter is everyone all the time talking about serious (often interesting) stuff or exercising the monkey coalition brain - both modes make it hard to pursue the absurd. All attempts quickly ossify into safe convention.

Second, it packages social signals as utmost sincerity - if you call someone a name, you are somehow ‘more honest’. But Twitter signalling, I think, is to sincerity what pornography is to love - leveraging one dimension to gratification at the expense of the holistic experience.

On Twitter it has some unfortunate effects. For one, it seems to strip most humorous activity. I find I am not funny, nor do I find others very funny. There’s some wit, but usually that wit too functions to distinguish an ingroup from an outgroup.

It describes the parts of the brain that evolved earlier and are more basic, focussed on signalling, perceiving, and keeping track of intent in groups. It’s not called ‘social’ media for nothing.

I’m not privy to the history of Twitter’s decisionmaking. Things usually evolve from play/tinkering and are then sustained for a reason.

Twitter is designed to bring out your monkey coalition brain. That is not 'more honest' than how you would react in real conversation with someone. It's just lower dimensional viewing (which, though, has its uses).

Other side of payoff : if Paul lies and is not stained, there's just one more hypocritical, powerless jackass on twitter making racist remarks who must now be much more disciplined in expressing himself. And for you, very little changes.

Beliefs rest on feelings of probability. They are often accurate. Often. Firemen die most on two dates: day one and after ten years of experience.

My point is about payoffs. Lasting stain of antisemitism is very harmful for a salaried person like Paul. You have a big following. If you're wrong he can lose a lot and you lose very little.

Precautionary presumption of innocence. Having the stain of antisemitism on him can cause him tremendous, lasting damage in real life. And crucially, I would not be exposed myself to any harm. I won't make it a bet, even if I felt confident.
