1. All right, this controversy over conservative columnists in is bugging me. Everyone is dancing around the central point! (The same central point everyone dances around in *numerous* contemporary controversies.) So I'ma lay it out.

One faction of conservatism are positioning themselves as "persons of intellectual diversity," a sort of minority similar to gay people that needs sympathy and affirmative action―which is a position that is catastrophically corrosive to enormous chunks of conservative thought.

Of course they could. Given a scapegoat and endless propaganda, it can push people that way. Desperation by it's nature evokes wild responses.

Do you think Native Americans, Africans, or Europeans immediately ceased all cultural practices, beliefs & traditions once the first settlement was stable? There were multiple cultures existing side by side.

It's a form of bait and switch. Here's a "diverse opinion" cherry-picked by the NYT to paint a pretty picture of an ugly reality, that conservatism has devolved into an ode to hunchbacked, knuckle dragging white identity politics.

And it seems to be random whether an individual person on the right is a protectionist who supports tariffs and blames the left for free trade, or a libertarian who demands a free market and blames the left for tariffs. It's just all over the place. There's nothing coherent.

This is unrelated to the broader discussion, but you are mistaken on Christian doctrine here. People unfamiliar with the Christian theological tradition can be led astray by concepts such as “ensoulment”, but tradition is clear that abortion is impermissible

Even among settlers, Pennsylvania Dutch, Puritans of New England, Baptists of Rhode Island, Catholics of Maryland, convicts of Georgia, and Spaniards of Florida had significantly different cultures. 8/13 original colonies had state religions.

The antithesis of cultural hegemony is cultural diversity. Unfortunately, massive corporations have significant influence on modern culture in much of the world, including the US. Corporate influence on culture isn't the same as "no culture."

Yes. The intense need to be in control just reveals how fearful those ppl are....accountability doesn’t factor into raw, unadulterated, primitive, pre-verbal fear & anxiety:(

Accelerationists, fascists, neo-monarchists... "Tangle of resentments" is exactly right. I remember hearing one person who said that they supported Trump because they believed that everyone on Earth should die, which is at least as well-thought-out as anything else I've heard.
