Even if we went to popular vote for President, predominately rural states would still get two Senators. Maybe that should be enough extra political power.

By the way, what I would really like to see is an in depth analysis of just how national popular vote would change how the parties approach presidential elections. Anyone know of such analysis?

We're a union of fifty semisovereign states. CT is as deep blue as you can get, and will gladly go to war to the last one of us in defiance and rebellion against CA running things. The other 49 states all feel the same. NONE of us will bow to this nonsense.
