Hipster cafes are great for a coffee break, except when you answer a call from the boss and it sounds like you've ducked out for a quick Cypress Hill gig

Well said. I also gave a lot of talks to a bunch of grumpy old men that did nothing but criticise - super helpful right! Those same scientists have since lost their grip on the field because they failed to move with the times. Sometimes it takes a while for karma to work :-p

Plenty of jobs out there in data science, best of luck if you decide to change fields. Find a good mentor if you haven't got one already, it'll help!

Cheers Amy, much appreciated. Thankfully I have a good position now with people who are supportive. Hope you're doing well with your research

5. Research life ain't easy. Don't get hung up on being the scientist you think you 'have to be'. The metrics we use in academia are bs, you are more than a goddamn h-index. Be tough, stay positive, live a life outside the lab

4. Now in my 4th role in 6 yrs, but going well with a great project. It's really hard to change fields and move cities, saying goodbye to friends, but it's given me a ton of experience. It's also taught me how to supervise ppl (i.e. the opposite of what my supervisors have done).

3. At this point I have a 6 mnth old daughter and a mortgage. Through all of this I stay courteous and positive so that my former sups give me good references. I get a job in a new city in another field, move with the family and begin training up again

2. I return to Oz, train up in mass spec. Next supervisor keeps shifting the goal-posts so projects go unpublished, told not to worry as we'll publish 'soon'. 3 wks before end of year HR tells me my contract is not renewed (while sup. takes holidays to avoid conversation)

1. My postdoc journey. Moved to France to escape a toxic lab environment in 1st role. Gathered good data after a hard year in the lab. My old supervisor then forms a collaboration with my new supervisor, co-opts my data into his manuscript, blocking me from publishing

Our students have fallen into a habit of leaving at 4pm. Today they turned the lights off and set the alarm... I was still pipetting blood at my bench. I'm about to bring their world down.

Honestly, the number of times someone's handed me a list of proteins/small molecules they want determined and have no real answer when I ask "why though?". People get too excited about data coming out of a magic box 😝

should be common sense that seniors acknowledge the worker bees in media releases, often not the case sadly

Date and description (e.g. 20190329_BloodStandards_sourceopt_1) in well-structured sub-folders for each project. Can never be too fussy with data organisation. Put a note in your ppt slides saying which exp/folder images are from. Use a file sync process (e.g. freefilesync)
