As talks about, we need a smart strategic centred to how we organise at all levels. But one that is an enabling “force multiplier” for delivery, not something that consumes all at the expense of frontline freedoms to adapt and react to the challenges we face.

That doesn’t necessarily mean we shift *everything* to the edges and hollow out the centre of govt/orgs/delivery models. Just that we have to rebalance again and fast. We have shifted drastically to a brittle, one dimensional model which is at risk of catastrophic failure.

Whether national vs local, corporate centre vs frontline delivery, PMO vs project teams trusted to deliver, it feels like we’ve reached the end of an era. We have to think differently about how to organise for change in public services at every level.

Almost every conversation around change in government that I’m part of at the moment points to the failure of top down centralised control vs the need to shift to decentralised and devolved power to deliver.

I hurts to think too deeply about what a monumental mistake this was and the tragic short term impact it is having on lost lives and the deep long term impact it will have on the economy/our quality of life.
