I feel like deep learning has killed a lot of pre-processing and moved ANNs away from the physiology model to a pure black box. Not making a value judgement, but wondering if bridging the two could make even more powerful.

We also aren't using hierarchical feature selection. Giant for are easy to build and train. Instead, we could train smaller networks to identify eyes, nose, ears, color, and fur. Then feed those into a panda v. gibbon classifier.
