Touch screen computers are media literacy machines. Teachers can have students use them to combine images, sound and text to tell all sorts of stories. And then ask questions about why they have made specific choices to address particular audiences.

Media literacy teachers, researchers & advocates have been doing amazing work for the past 50 years+. Masterman’s book ‘Teaching About Television’ came out in 1980, & media education was already a thing. What will the next 50 yrs look like for media literacy?

To understand media literacy in digital contexts we need to deal with the question of what counts as media. Are data, algorithms, user interfaces and social networks ‘media’? If we say yes, how do we include these in media lit programs?

Some scholars having rightly argued that media literacy is not a silver bullet for digital media problems. But without critical thinking about media, we will never change current conditions. Media literacy is a vital element alongside regulation.

Like all literacy, media literacy isn’t something you have or attain. Media literacy is enacted, including through critical negotiations with challenging ideas. Media literacy isn’t content to be taught. It should provide space for trying out new & critical ideas.
