When learning a new tool, I highly recommend that the first thing you do is try to do is something ridiculous.
It can just be a tiny bit ridiculous in a very simple way. But it will probably help you have fun quickly, which will help you stick to it, and learn more.

and for big telescopes, mirrors are easier to make because they're single-sided. a lens has two sides, which have to be perfect or there will be some distortion.
A mirror only has one side, so it's easier to make them at higher quality.
