My new book, The Far Right Today, is out today! I argue that populist radical right politicians are increasingly mainstreamed & normalized. And that’s dangerous. It’s time to push back against their normalization & reclaim the political agenda.

Deputy head of CDU group in Thüringen suggests that a collaboration with AfD could be possible. This is in itself already a massive normalization of the AfD‘s extreme right wing and shows how meaningless cordon sanitaire declarations of mainstream right parties can be.

Also worth considering: While Kurz shifted right on immigration and successfully pulled 2013 FPÖ voters to the ÖVP, the SPÖ also moved strongly to the right in their 2017 manifesto and lost twice as many voters to the FPÖ as the ÖVP gained from the FPÖ.

Updated paper with and : more anti-immigrant positions of mainstream parties do not weaken but if anything strengthen radical right parties. This holds for a number of different context conditions such as new vs established RRPs.
