I’ll take it further.. A Muslim is much freer to live and practice and be exposed to full spectrum of Islamic traditions in ‘the West’ than most of Muslim majority states that tightly control and enforce a particular sanctioned version

The mother of Khalid Said, the icon of Egypt's Jan 25 revolution has passed away. She herself became a symbol. During the 18 days, she stayed at the house of Pierre Sioufi, the "guardian of Tahrir square" who sheltered Tahrir protesters. Pierre died last year.

Extremely concerned by use of live ammunition by Sudanese security forces against protestors in Khartoum today, with reports of civilian casualties. After Monday’s awful violence and killings this is inexplicable. Military Council must act to stop this now. No more excuses.

I ran the Journal's Baghdad bureau for four years when mortars, car bombs & stray bullets targeted the Green Zone & US embassy several times a day. State Dept. didn't evacuate staff.

NEW: UK's goes into crisis mode because of escalating tensions in between US & Iran in the Gulf. It's at low-end of crisis scale for now ('crisish?' quipped a colleague) with a few extra staff focused on issue, but this could be scaled up
