This is the one where Universal inducted Holmes whole-heartedly into their horror line: spooky mansion, stormy night, lightning bolt, secret passage, bloodthirsty crow, ancient ritual - they’re all here.

I write at 4.30 on a Sunday- well, this one, to be precise - what you might call the arse-hole of the week. Lunchtime drink dead, not time for six o’clock gin. Tea? Don’t make me cross.

When mine finally died, I couldn’t face putting new separates together, so switched over to a Sonos 5. It has a line-in socket.

I didn’t think I could love Preston Sturges more. This description of his delirious LA nightclub The Players comes from ’s wonderful The Castle on Sunset.

I don’t think any of the films in Indicator’s first William Castle box are great cinema, but they’re madly entertaining - there’s something thrilling about those unmediated ideas just being thrown out there without being edited or filtered.

A Psycho knock-off that ties itself in knots trying to pursue the line of its own conceit, and ends up as some kind of deviant classic. Favourite line: “Then they went to Denmark, and we don’t know what happened there.”
