Southern hemisphere Sphagnum magellanicum is actually 2 species, S. divinum & S. medium. The few Scottish cases of S. divinum were lost due to peatland degradation. That's why is so important. Read more in

A lichen because it gets its sugars through a symbiotic relationship with an algal partner. Lichenised fungi come from a range of fungal families but not so often from one that forms clubs like this. It was an exciting find 😀

Great news - the beautiful & unusual lichen Multiclavula corynoides has been discovered for the 1st time in Britain! Sometimes known as Club-wielding Crust Lichen, it was found by our lichen expert when mountain biking around Ben Wyvis.
