That progress can be "hard" and could require creativity is virtually unanimously agreed. So that's not the Moloch argument that people get alarmed about.

This was a remarkable speech —

Moloch is the apotheosis of comprehensive pessimism about human action and the possibility of progress.

Moloch is the misconception that one can apply game theory to situations that involve creativity, which in reality game theory cannot model or address.

Just uploaded the next chapter to Karl Popper's Conjectures and Refutations: Chapter 5, Back to the Presocratics. One of my favorite stories in this chapter about the birth of science in Ionia🥰

That clip was something else, more important than poor judgement and tone deaf. If was factually false political propaganda aimed at children.

Comparison with power plants is a bit shaky because we rate them by *useful* power (work rate) not total power.
Theoretical limit of work rate per unit volume? Controlled black hole accretion I guess. Maximised for small spinning black holes. But they wear out, so may not count.

Yeah but I was trying to think of a slogan that a Popperian party could use as its general-purpose rallying cry..
Like "Save the Planet" for Greens or "Save the NHS" for Labour.

And a nuclear fusion reactor will have many millions of times that power per unit volume. So much for its being merely an "artificial sun"!

The crassness of this BBC children’s clip is remarkable. a) The slave trade was made illegal before Victoria became Queen. b) Her governments went to great lengths to stamp it out. c) Brits had access to tea and sugar due to free trade. d) Buying imports is not “un-British”. twitter.com/cbbc/status/12…
