"Advertising is based on one thing, happiness. And you know what happiness is? Happiness is the smell of a new car. It's freedom from fear. It's a billboard on the side of the road that screams reassurance that whatever you are doing is okay. You are okay." ~ Don Draper

I never liked having to pay for surveys. For most ideas there are far better ways to use the budget.

I've seen agencies who are publicly against this sort of stuff engage in all kinds of shady practices with their clients. That's plain wrong. You shouldn't attract clients with lies, smoke and mirrors.(2/2)

If you're doing anything like this, you definitely have to be honest and upfront with your approach and explain the potential risks to your client. That is what I love about Julie as she is always open and honest about what she does and how she does it. (1/2)

No one said you 'always really need to' but you're right, there's lots of examples of editorially given links helping to achieve top rankings. But I appreciate the candor of Julie and Garrett. Regardless of whether you buy links, I'm sure everyone will learn from these legends.

The more you overthink it and try to control it, the more you're shaping an unnatural backlink profile.

Then again, I think about it as a citizen of the Web. Links are how we move inside the Internet, how we discover stuff, how we share things with others. If you've created something so relatable and interesting that people around the world are linking to it, you've done well.
