Thank you! If I used Hamilton that would have to be a big part of our discussion and we’d have to add/compare to historical Indigenous perspectives & contemporary perspectives of the musical.

I've got to work Hamilton into my social studies methods class next semester. Anyone used it in class? If so, how? Pair it with primary docs or other texts?

I also reorganized AP Government around themes from our summer read - George Orwell's 1984. It was fun, but Parker & Lo's stuff is better. :)

Reading about "Confusion Day" of 1955, when Oklahoma City converted several miles worth of 16 streets to one-way overnight. Pedestrians downtown were "having a time of it" and bus riders were puzzled trying to find their buses.

I really like the questions for students: To what degree did slavery and segregation end, persist, or evolve? Makes that focus on continuity of institutional racism, not just changes (e.g., 14th amendment, Brown v Board)...

So here's a very quick and basic rundown of the issue. It's complicated, but here's the basic gist.

This conversation is a good example of how social studies educators might engage students in understanding continuity & change. The 13th amendment was change, but what stayed the same despite the law change? Same can apply to many historical events.
