get yourself a DBX 286s. Warm preamp with inline compression, noise fate, and all the gain you'll ever need. We have eight.

Thanks. It does seem perfect in most ways, although I wish it was smaller. Trying to keep things desk-sized if possible.

It's not small in any way, but it's the best you'll find in the sub 1k range, and it doesn't get much better until you hit 5k.

Is there a jam-band bluesy song about having to buy your first 12U rack-mount frame?

your apogee is the best in class, but you don't want it's gain.

I actually found the Apogee to have amazing gain and low noise β€” best I’ve heard β€”Β but I hate required software and dongles.

Hard to deny that the 286 looks like an amazing value.

Does the DBX 286s have enough gain for low output dynamic mics (SM57, e.g.) without something like a Cloudlifter?

depends on the mic you have on it. Dan’s Sure SM7b is extremely gain hungry and certainly benfits from it.

@gtcaz I'd never used cloud lifter. Yes of course it does. King of gain. Nothing wants more gain than sm7bs and PR-40's.

He has a shire sm7b. Great with PR40's and RE20's too. Best pre amp I've used.

Check with Casey to see if there's a better vinyl model.

Per comments on Amplified I thought 5by5 stopped using the DBX's and replaced them with an Universal Audio Apollo.

curious to know what you mean by required software/dongles. Most of runs of the drivers built in to every Mac...
