I think it’s fair to say that FDR set some suboptimal long-term precedents. But there is zero doubt in my mind that he was the right person for the times, just like Churchill, while having significant flaws was the right man to lead England during WW2.

One of the biggest ironies of history is that the two presidents who contributed to the biggest reductions in nuclear weapons were both Republicans: George HW Bush and Ronald Reagan. They should be appreciated more for this.

Actually it turns out that Clinton’s was the only actual decrease at 1%. Truman comes in second with a 2% increase, Ike third with a 6% increase. Ike was pretty good, especially when an escalating Cold War should have jacked up expenditures.

That’s fair, but Clinton is still responsible for the Wall St-White House revolving door that was continued by his successors. Interestingly though, for all of Republican fiscal conservatism, he and Truman are the only two post-war presidents who left with a budget surplus.

Clinton got lucky in being handed the collapse of the Soviet Union, but I consider his repeal of the Glass-Steagall act as one of the most disastrous decisions any president has made, leading to the financial crises and years of woe. And of course morally Clinton was pretty bad.

My guess is that Truman will age like fine wine while Clinton will stink more and more like bad fish as time passes.

Quark-gluon plasma. RHIC at and the at were passing each other for the record, but I think currently holds the record.

Yes, I think he was like phlogiston, illuminating an important part of the human mind while being wrong about the details. Eric Kandel describes it well in his book.

What is the highest temperature achieved by human beings outside of a thermonuclear reaction, and how has it been done? I know that the lowest temperature has been achieved by adiabatic cooling

I am optimistic about humanity in the short term and long term. It’s the medium term that worries me.

Remarkable how hard it continues to be for people to appreciate the difference between supporting someone’s views and supporting their right to state those views.

Freud will continue to be one of the supremely important people in history, both because of his wrong ideas and his right ones - especially his recognition of the role of the unconscious as a mainstay of the human psyche.

They certainly should, although let’s hope it helps because the other side seems to be bent on presenting the west as being rooted in irredeemable sins.

One of the greatest scenes in movie history (from “Gettysburg”), and in fact one of the greatest episodes in war history. It’s remarkable how it sends a chill down my spine and brings tears to my eyes every single time I watch it.
