We are local reporters. We are organizing because no community is too small to deserve well-funded, well-trained, dedicated journalists.

We are proud to support the union effort. We stand with them calling on and the local management of the Capital Gazette, the Carroll County Times and the community papers of the Baltimore Sun Media Group to voluntarily recognize Chesapeake News Guild.

"The initiative, say staffers, is driven by low pay and a sense of alienation that comes with working as part of such a large corporation; the newspaper is a unit of the Baltimore Sun Media Group, which is in turn part of Tribune Publishing."

Our corporate leaders lament a “challenging business environment” they say necessitates these staffing cuts. Yet they unfailingly find room in their budgets to give themselves extravagant salaries, bonuses and raises. This severely restricts our ability to serve our readers.

Tribune Publishing must notify our leadership if they plan to implement layoffs. They must also bargain with us about the conditions of those layoffs. The Guild has not received any such notification. Nonetheless, we are dismayed the plan to further shrink our newsrooms.

The Chicago Tribune Guild has sent the following letter to Tribune Publishing's Board of Directors as the board prepares to choose the company's new owner. "We need an owner with vision, who understands there’s still a way to make money in newspapers and do it with integrity."

From our members at the Sarasota Newspaper Guild: Great news: By unanimous vote, we have a contract! It’s likely the first newspaper labor contract in Florida in a generation!

We’re eager to bargain with any new owner. Hopefully it’s someone as invested in quality journalism as we are.

This is great news, and shows us how a strong and militant union can successfully organize. The bargained for more than a year to get a contract that includes salary minimums and will tangibly improve conditions for the Thrillist staff. ✊

Restoring our good name is great. Now let's restore some of those jobs left unfilled by a hiring freeze.
