Rau said that as of 2 p.m, the gas was shut off and the area was safe. He said Broadway was open, but Pearl Street would remain closed until repairs are completed.

A contractor setting a pole struck a 2-inch gas line with an auger at the corner of South Pearl Street and East Broadway, between noon and 12:30 p.m. Monday, according to Columbia Gas Communications Manager Dave Rau.
