As I remember the early debate after the May launch he actually had no clue that satellites could be seen in the sky at all ... and even believed the ISS was only visible because someone turned the lights on (wish I had a reliable source for the latter quote).

I can understand (but not condone) that Elon fanboys swallow the "free internet for the world" BS hook, line and sinker, but it's disturbing that many astronomers have fallen for it, too: "although I'm all for Musk doing so much good, perhaps a little less sky pollution..." Sigh.

Sundogs with strong spectral effects are cool - here's one I caught in 2015: - but when the clouds move the effect is even more dramatic:

It's a (particularly colorful but not too rare form of a) sundog - see for one I once caught, also with wide-field views that give away the geometry.

BTW, here is another recent digital treatment of that legendary 1895 movie clip: - wonder how much (manual) effort is involved in this ... and whether we might soon / one day see a lot of poor quality early space age footage in a new way. h/t

An amazing demonstration what AI can generate from (really) only film footage: - wonder when we'll see the First Man on the Moon video restored to IMAX resolution (I mean the real 1969 broadcast, not the recent movie).

Re. SAR, are handheld personal locator beacons sold on Amazon these days - - "mainstream" enough? (Re. Starlink internet-from-the-sky rural American seems to be the first market to be targeted indeed. Re. OneWeb I dunno - we'll see soon enough.)

I'm sincerely sorry to hear that and I'm not an expert in practical satellite-enabled SAR - but perhaps a system like the recently launched (which is working worldwide) would help. And COSPAS-SARSAT has been around for decades:
