Q1: I would magically turn myself into an author-illustrator. No doubt.

I actually sometimes envy those who only write because they can write more manuscripts. Author-illustrators have to work on that portfolio and make dummy books! (But it is fun)

Hi there...I'm a PB author. I will tell you that this is absolutely true. I call it the "curse of the writer who can't draw." When I'm writing, I can see the story clear as day in my brain, but I have no business trying to draw ANYTHING.

That is a FANTASTIC point. I do write a ridiculous amount of manuscripts, and you're right- if i had to illustrate them too, i wouldn't write nearly as much. But... i sure would love it if I had a place to put the images in my head

As someone who teaches people who claim they simply cannot draw that they actually can do so, I state firmly that anyone who wants to learn to draw has every business of learning to do so. Of course I'm biased but I feel very strongly about this.

Alastair, welcome! Spot on. I would love to put my art skills to use, but then everytime I see the illustrators' work, I realize I'd best leave it to them. We're lucky to have some amazing illustrators bringing our stories to life though.

I would add a counter-point as an author-illustrator that I'm quickly realizing that I have way more stories to write than I can possibly illustrate (and that I might not be the best illustrator for). It's very challenging to let go off that ego-driven need.

That’s one of my favorite parts of illustrating too! Hoping I exceed what’s in the authors head

Omg, what a question. The Fan Brothers & Jake Parker are two of my favorite illustrators. But honestly, i have such an appreciation for EVERY SINGLE STYLE. I'm constantly following illustrators. I am just blown away by the unique talent of each one of them.

I am enjoying seeing Authors "ogle" illustrators the way some songwriters do. And great taste!
