The $100K list price for that parking space in wouldn’t cover the cost of a spot in this proposed taxpayer-funded garage. PA gives away public parking for free. This helps explain Palo Alto has no homeless cars, but many homeless people.

Lately I've been moving away from the idea of redesigning streets as the solution for safety and mobility. Many of our streets are designed just fine. The only problem is that there are too many cars on them.

Nope. Travel choices are shaped by public policy. More roads = more driving. Less roads = less driving. Many examples of road closures from NYC prove works: Washington Sq Pk, West Side Highway, Central Park, Times Sq, 14th St. Also:

"Wrath, modern people do not want to live in these old houses!" "This is some of the most expensive real estate in Europe." "Yeah but it is all because of the location!" "Then let us build more of these 'locations'".

If your mayor or governor's plan doesn't include substantial investment in transit and bicycle infra - while simultaneously rolling back a significant portion of driving subsidies - then it's clearly and sadly just more standard-issue .

Yes, but: "Freeway management" is an oxymoron. If they managed them, i.e. asked users to pay anything resembling the cost of providing them, they wouldn't always become congested.

Boston Brownstone 🏠: regulate the color of the doors, window style, railing design, what can be built inside & on roof. Owners pay property tax 💰. Boston Parking spot 🚘: You can have as many as you want and park anything you want for as long as you want, free of charge.

How do we classify the terrorist group that zooms all the smashy things around the city and kills dozens of unarmed people per year? Is it the work of daily car commuters or traffic engineers?

I was thinking about the bike bridge ODOT wants to inflict on PDX and wondering what a 9% grade would feel like. Looks like It's basically equivalent to a climb up Mt. Tabor? Any lycra-wearing-folks want to correct me or care to give other local examples for comparison?

I like this thread but it is important to keep in mind that cities compete for talent. Maintaining a reputation as a "green city" helps to attract the skilled (think of Portland, Boston, and now Pittsburgh). This provides an incentive for these cities to invest their own $.

Bravo to for separating parking cost from admission cost. Five dollars to enter and $15 to park, as opposed to $20 or more for everyone at most similar places.

Isn't it amazing how LA's developers are uniquely greedy? If only we the benevolent, non-profit-seeking developers of Houston or Phoenix, all our problems could be solved. We definitely don't have ourselves to blame!

Virtual reality allows this woman cycling on a car-free country lane to experience the terror of driving on an auto-choked stroad, which is the reality for most cyclists, thanks to the practices advanced by the folks at TRB
