Personal trivia, and the future of all humanity. I do cryptography for Android, but only very rarely is this account about that. I block for sarcasm. 🏳️🌈

On Sam Harris's podcast I think de Becker is explicit that you must not listen to the voice that says "it would be bigoted of me to be frightened here so I'll ignore my instincts".

Could a machine ever be as big as a human? Ten machine scientists argue that the idea of "super-sized machines" is implausible science fiction: what does it even mean to be "human-sized", anyway? arxiv.org/pdf/1703.10987…

Q: Nothing seems to have changed, so what was the big deal about Brexit?
A: That's because of the transitional period. Until 2021, nothing much changes, except the UK no longer has any say or influence over the rules it has to comply with.

One of the most substantial problems with the “culture war” is its name. By nature it makes it sound SERIOUS and IMPORTANT.
It is a series of provocative and soul-sapping takes, the junk food of public discourse, the bait too tasty not to take. It needs a name as dumb as that.

OK, but also, some people are smarter than others, and it would also explain what you're seeing if being smarter led to both going to University and voting Remain. Reality doesn't care whether that's "patronizing"...

Something's gone wrong with threading - the tweet you're replying to is about hunger and other bad outcomes leveling off from their fall...

Hmm, sure, it's always hard to think of examples where it's been good to challenge what we currently think is taboo - but challenging past taboos on who had moral value sure was good!

They need normies and, sufficiently deprived, will move to irony level 3 and become normies themselves.

I think it's pretty straightforward to come up with examples where we used to have something be taboo and it was bad, then we cracked open the taboo and it was good. LGBT causes for one!

My searches don't find anything solid backing this up, and I think they would if it had happened. Not defending MM in general.

When POTUS walks into the room, all must stand, and wait until he sits before they can sit. That helps him not at all, but it feels great; everyone has to undergo a pointless inconvenience for him. So be wary of giving people easy ways to inflict visible pointless inconvenience.

when you see superbowl commercials saying "with our software, everyone can do their own taxes" you should be asking the question "why do we need to do our taxes"

yearly reminder that the only reason why things like turbotax are even relevant is because intuit and other tax prep companies lobby to prevent the government from just doing the work for you

Taboos always create their own catch-22 because you can't decide whether or not you should taboo something without thinking about it, and we can't think about it if it's taboo. I really think the assumption should be that taboos are pretty much *always* harmful.
