Reporting estimated cases also has a lot of issues. It's very hard to quickly interpret an estimate in this scenario--need to know how estimates are formed, and that's time consuming.

Maybe. Most epidemiologists won't conflate the number of confirmed cases with the number of actual cases. Even with other diseases, it's common for these numbers to be much different.

In the classiest bit of fast food marketing possibly ever:
Left: McDonalds in Akihabara announces it is closing after 22 years.
Right: Burger King thanks them for 22 years of friendly rivalry and bringing smiles to the neighborhood. twitter.com/sato322/status…

By the same logic, shouldn't people who don't want to die put much more effort into eating healthy, exercising, and finding religion?

Statistical significance may not be the right tool w/ probabilities that come from a betting market, but FWIW, there's decent trading volume on people like Yang. I don't think someone putting a small bet on Yang would have a substantive effect the odds Betfair gives him.

I don't think the question here is about statistical significance as much as how rational the market is for fringe candidates.
There are entities that do polling on this sort of question, I thing Yang fairs pretty well in those polls.

I'm more sympathetic to the original commenter here. I felt that he was saying this is an imperfection of markets (not proof that markets don't work). In many domains, being a well-informed consumer comes with high opportunity costs. Those high costs have consequences.

I don't really understand the physics or engineering involved, but it seems much more plausible that satellite connections would supplement cellular coverage rather than replace cellular entirely.

No it's not. Free daycare is one thing. Having a school system that isn't sure whether its primary purpose is education or daycare leads to a whole bunch of unnecessary boredom and suffering for kids.

Subsidized, optional childcare after school seems like a hell of a lot better option (and could take place in school buildings). Seems way better than forcing kids to spend more time doing things many of them don't want to do.

Could you similarly frame all trade deals as bribes? Does the short-term nature of this deal make it more bribe-like?

For what it's worth, I think you might be underappreciating how easy it is to read what you wrote in the non-charitable way. I had to re-read your tweet several times before the charitable interpretation seemed remotely plausible.

I think people scandalously underrate the Internet. I think *I* probably scandalously underrate the Internet, even though I will likely write an essay about taking the Internet seriously.
We got the best cheat code ever vis-a-vis prior generations but it's considered frivolous.
