between Lauryn Hill's live performance, the peach galette that is currently baking in my oven and THIS, i'm beginning to see the cheer-up light.

"His strength lay in the fact that he wrote as someone thankful that the Los Angeles of today was not the Los Angeles of his youth ... Drop the privilege, Gold constantly preached: These “foreigners” are Southern Californians just like you. So eat."

something to add about Jonathan Gold that I wish we celebrated him for when we had a chance was how supportive he was of younger food writers. he didn't have to be; most people aren't. but he really was. and it meant so, so much. if he only knew. maybe he did. i hope so.

truly, the lyrics of that song are AMAZING. almost exactly the same as the Eliot original. "Gus is the cat at the Theater Door [DOUR?] His name, as I ought to have told you before Is really Asparagus, but that's such a fuss to pronounce That we usually call him just Gus" sigh.

Did you meet standing in the check-out line or inspecting produce? I asked. "The line," she responded. "I like to say--when I tell this story, which I like to do--that we met 'online' the old-fashioned way." Yes, I added: in line will always be better than online. I ❤️NY.

oh! that's so nice! congratulations! I said, and asked how long she'd known her betrothed. she explained they were renewing their vows after 11 years of marriage. and it was necessary that she go to Citarella, specifically because that's where they'd met (cont.)

about how someone should have helped her earlier by telling her not to go the market in the first place. BUT of course, she said, i HAD to go to the market because, would you believe, all this is for my wedding tomorrow?! (cont.)

she stopped mid-block, to enter her building and looked to be having a hard time. so I asked if she needed help. she told me she was OK, as she slowly worked her way through the door, and said she felt like making a joke (cont.)
