and yet we're left with one word for love. The collective decisions of the masses on what to keep and what to discard are highly questionable at best

English makes me actively mad, like, not only syllables don't map to univocal pronunciation, but there's words which are spelled the same but pronounced differently! Like lead and lead! It's the MOST maddening thing, Uncoupling of text from sound. How the fuck did it get this bad

Yeah like, even just ~10 words for it like the Greeks would be something, English is just pitiful by comparison lmao

Greek is already something, for sure. For example, being able to distinguish agape/metta from the rest is huge already

So apparently Sanskrit actually had more than 200 words for love??? This is what an enlightened society looks like.

Currently we're using the same word for "I love this donut" vs "I love my wife." How is this not insane? How is this not glaring? Expanding our vocabulary concerning all forms of love looks like one low-hanging fruit to make people more aware of such emotions and feelings.

Renegotiating language has been a power move since time immemorial, from policing words to creating new ones to express something that couldn't previously be shared easily. If we have a word for it, it becomes easy to reference, and the concept becomes immediate to build upon!

Each time I discuss love I find that everyone has a different opinion on it, because everyone is talking about something different! This is a vital, vital part of our experience that we have to fully reappropriate if we're to move on, and we need to be able to talk about it!

If we're to reclaim depth and nuance of emotions, we need more words for them. "Ancient Persian and Sanskrit possessed more than eighty words for love, denoting different qualities and valences of communal and erotic feeling." EIGHTY. WTF are we doing with just the one word

People don’t often realize the most interesting things about them are their natural inclinations.

I didn't do this intentionally, but it's exactly what I've fallen into. It's been game changing.

Yeah, if nothing lasts, everything contains the seed of its own undoing, so one might just as well accept it and take in stride and laugh it up

There's been multiple reports of people eg. getting better at tennis by practicing it in lucid dreams, so that'd be a very cheerful yes

I wonder if this implies that you can become better at things simply by meditating on visualizations of repetitions of a known practice
