A #darkpattern on Facebook- messenger was forcing me to change my privacy/location settings.
In messenger’s unprompted pop up, I have 2 options. In iOS location services, I have 4. When I’m back in app to look for more choices, I’m taken to a mobile webpage to log into Facebook. pic.twitter.com/uai8NXK7Ok

While I do appreciate the prompt as a privacy reminder, it’s only given me two choices: seemingly privacy “light” and none at all.

The popup is not from the App. It is iOS asking in its own way if you want to degrade from "Always" to “While Using the App”. The completely different terminology in that dialog relating to “in the background” is maybe not the best.

Serious concern. Isn't FB 'privacy' broken by design as FB is entirely dependent on surveillance capitalism. For some (many?), not using FB isn't viable because of n/w effects. But what alternatives? Wait until govts break up big tech -unlikely that'll happen.

The pop-up is from iOS as others have pointed out and its intention is to guard you against apps silently tracking your location in the background. Shitty Facebook part is if you remove all their access to location data they force you to re-login, most likely to get a location.
