I don't have an interesting conclusion to this thread or anything. Just, yeah. 70s/80s/90s lesbian convos about gender as the sole proxy for power—so weird.

Sometimes it manifested in a myth that only butch women could abuse their femme girlfriends. (Again, this idea that maleness had been "smuggled into lesbian utopia.")

There was a lot of fighting within the lesbian community about what it meant that women abused women, and they directed their energy in a bunch of places, including the idea that lesbians who abused their lovers were, functionally, acting as men, or adopting male privilege.

So this interview with is amazing for so many reasons, but (for me) especially this little detail, which dovetails with research I'm doing about "lesbian battering" and how lesbians of the 80s/90s talked (and fought) about the issue.

(And if you're like, "Wait, Carmen, didn't that memoir used to have a different title?" It did, when Graywolf acquired it last year. But it has a new one now.)
