Although @gruber described this as a "delight to read", I felt like I was reading a slow-motion car crash!! These recollections make me extremely thankful of the life I have and the company I work for, as this team's environment is my precise idea of hell. techreflect.net/2019/12/10/ape…

It started out well but turned into a very bad scene. The article matches up well with my recollections.

Do you think things have changed at Apple? Was "abuse is actually just passion!!" a thing that was more accepted during the Jobs era? I'd have to think/hope that a team like this, with managers like this, wouldn't stand today.

Well, “delight to read” is not “delight to live”. I thought “The Irishman” was a delight to watch, but I sure as shit don’t want to get curb-stomped.

There’s nothing delightful about it. I hope Cricket finds peace.
I suffered the same long-term emotional damage as a result of managerial abuse.
We lost 150 years of Apple experience in just a matter of a year or two. Because of a single manager.
(Fixes spelling of peace)

After my morning dose of coffee I rewrote that, changing “delightful” to “enthralling”, which better captures what I meant *and* the nature of the story itself.

It brings me joy that Panic doesn’t work like that. Sometimes I get worry that we can only get Apple-grade products through overwork, and you’re proof that that isn’t necessary.

It seriously hurt to read that article, having loved Aperture like I did.

An additional data point as someone who worked on the Aperture / Photos engineering team (albeit much later, and for a much shorter time): my time at Apple was probably the best overall experience of my career. So many smart, professional, passionate people.
