I love Super Bowl statistics. (“No team that has failed to convert at least 35% of their 3rd downs has gone on to win” etc.) They are the best introduction to p-hacking that can be found outside major journals.

Yak eruption! A good band name and post-apocalyptic trilogy for our times.

Just finished book and I’m now trying to lean into discomfort, actively falsify my beliefs, and listen to my voice of curiosity. Also, aporia is my jam

I hadn’t read that but it is a great example of the framing I am trying to push forward a bit. For example: 'The best future politics puts collaborative pluralism, weaving, at the center.' Not a bad statement, but his weaving movement must ultimately compete with other proposals.

It had to be this way, since most of evolution and history climbed towards higher and higher forms of productivity without any true intention (or wisdom about how) to do so. It’s a free-floating productive disagreement / virtual engine / opponent process that works despite us.

Some call this dynamic a virtual engine, or an opponent process. I think of it as productive disagreement. A disagreement can be productive even if you only wanted to win, as long as it stays alive long enough to fuel this back-and-forth self-correcting dialogue.

I see competitive and collaborative urges as two forces that must always remain strong enough to overpower and correct the corruptive tendencies in the other. They sharpen each other. Each blade is improved by the other, against its will.

It’s tempting to see the corrective power of collaboration and to believe that if only collaboration could permanently overpower competition, we’d be better off as a society. But I disagree.

This dynamic is everywhere. And points to the fact that competition and collaboration aren’t opposites, but rather siblings. One uses might, the other uses size, but both aim for power. And both can be corrupted by power. (See: all institutions)

We compete for power but also know that power corrupts. The only way to overthrow overpowered corruption is by collaborating with less powerful but more numerous people and groups against them.

Those groups are cooperative, but there is competition for status and privilege within them.

Markets are competitive, but we form cooperative groups and relationships inside those markets.

It’s possible to see the evolution of society as a battle between competitive and cooperative urges.

I dropped my phone in water yesterday and it’s still working fine but just noticed the letters along the right edge of my keyboard don’t work. Autocorrect is no longer a convenience but now a required assist for all words that have a ‘p’ in them. Whippersnapper hippocampus!

Well said! Avoiding a well set motte-and-bailey trap means we don’t have to erode discourse in the name of moral duty. Your suggestion to ask people for a clearly stated argument is a much better move.
